Shashlik
was at Shashlik for dinner last nite.
it's this really old Russian restuarant,
very old-school furnishing (think Jack's Place in the early 90s),
hidden in the the 6th floor of the very old Far East Shopping Centre. pretty much a family place.
i arrvied at 7.45pm... had to wait for about.. 15mins?
lesson: make prior reservations =)
it's a Russian restaurant, serviced by Hainanese staff (supposedly the chefs as well).
first the entrees, the Borsch soup ($6) with a swirl of cream was very hearty =)
the soup was thick and fragrant, the beef slices were tender
and the root vegetables were well-stewed.
the Fish Solvakia soup ($6) was... thin and salty.
one piece of fish, with shredded seaweeds.. not impressive.
the Escargots ($11) weren't good either,
next came the main courses.the Beef Shashlik ($20) which was beef tenderloin grilled on a long skewer was fantastic!
it was well marinated and hence flavourful and tender =)
the portions were just enough for one person without over-stuffing.
the grilled T-Bone steak ($20) on the other hand, was good too.
wasn't tough or charred. however, it was not well-marinated,
hence it still had the beefy stench.
the serving was enormous, thus gets quite sick after a while.
thankfully it comes with pickled cabbage shreds and onions.
finally the dessert.
the Baked Alaska is very old-school! =)
topped with plenty of cream, orange slices and cherries.
the waitress will pour some lit brandy over it and serve.
highly popular but needs at least 3 persons to polish it off.
there's this Fancy Pancake dish (for 2 persons)
which is actually pancakes with orange brandy sauce.
i didn't get a chance to try it, coz by the time i finished my main course,
they ran outta pancaked. dang!
however, judging from the old couple tucking in happily at next table,
the pancakes were thin and soft, drenched in orange liquer.
shouldn't be disappointing =)
ohh... *drool drool*
they also have this Brandied Cherries with ice-cream dish.
didn't try it thou.. not exactly in mood for ice cream last nite.
so if you ever try it, let me know how it went! =P
Verdict:
Food - 4 / 5 stars (recommendations: Borsh soup, Beef Shashlik, Chicken Kiev and dessert!)Service - 2.5 / 5 stars (some staffs are unfriendly; be prepared to be ignored during rush hr)Ambience: 2 / 5
